"Introducing curves in furniture can be both exciting and intimidating. The same can be said of hand-cutting dovetails. So surely cutting half-blind dovetails in a concave drawer front must be a real emotional roller-coaster!..."
Ed Welch—Project Manager and founder of Dovetail Construction

Ed began his construction career in 1979, joining a crew remodeling an Air Force Dining Hall in Austin, Texas. He worked construction in the summers during college then got the opportunity in 1982 to travel around the world to Sialkot, Pakistan, where he spent a year site managing an eighteen-room addition on a hospital. After finishing his BA in English Literature and teaching in Africa for two years, Ed returned to residential construction in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1980’s.

After working in various trades as a framer, finish carpenter, and cabinetmaker, Ed eventually returned to construction management for Berkeley design/build firm, Wilson Associates. As site superintendent for this dynamic firm, Ed oversaw the completion of numerous very complex projects and gained a solid foundation in jobsite management.

Upon leaving Wilson Associates and moving to Seattle, WA, Ed became his own boss as a general contractor and cabinetmaker, specializing in kitchen remodels and returning to his love of woodworking. After studying with well-known Seattle furniture maker Ross Day, Ed continued his woodworking education at the College of the Redwoods under the guidance of world-renowned furniture artist, James Krenov. Ed’s woodworking has been exhibited at the Highlight Gallery in Mendocino, CA, and he has appeared in “Fine Woodworking” magazine twice, once in the gallery section in February, 2003 and once in a featured article he wrote about hand cutting dovetails (hence, the name of the company) in concave drawers.

Since returning to CA, Ed has built his own home, prominently featured in this website, and become a licensed general contractor with a C-6 specialty qualification in cabinetmaking and interior woodwork. In 2006, he founded Dovetail Construction, the culmination of his widespread experience and expertise in the building trades.
